SEACOLOGY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE JOB DESCRIPTION
Seacology is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environments of the world’s islands. We partner with indigenous island communities to protect local terrestrial and marine ecosystems while supporting the community with needed benefits such as schools, community centers, or fresh water systems. Based in Berkeley, California, we have over 200 projects in 48 countries around the world, protecting nearly two million acres of island habitat. Learn more about Seacology at www.seacology.org.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Seacology has a small fundraising team that works closely with foundations, corporations, board members, major donors, international affiliates, and other supporters. The development associate is key to securing the funding necessary to fulfill Seacology’s mission, and plays a critical supportive role to the development director and executive director. Specific responsibilities include:
- Prepare grant proposals, biannual reports, and other donor communications
- Maintain fundraising calendar for tracking grant reporting, proposals, and other deadlines
- Act as primary researcher investigating foundations and fundraising opportunities
- Organize annual Seacology Prize Ceremony, biannual board meetings, private receptions, and other events with development director
- Coordinate annual mass mailings and other solicitations throughout the year
- Track and file information about donations from board members and major donors
- Assist with database entry using FundRaiser software
- Provide backup support in answering phones and other office tasks as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Interest in fundraising and at least two years of nonprofit fundraising experience
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to adhere to deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience with event planning is a plus
- Proficient in computer and internet skills (primarily Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Sense of humor and ability to work cooperatively with a small staff
- Interest in and knowledge of environmental issues strongly preferred
- Minimum 2-year commitment is desired
