Conservation benefit: Establishment of Tafua Samoa Rainforest Preserve

Date Approved: 01.1995

Forest

This project protects forest, preventing the release of greenhouse gases and reducing erosion that damages coastal and ocean ecosystems.

The Tafua peninsula on the Samoan island of Savai’i is home to one of the most precious rainforests in the South Pacific. Together with Seacology, the local conservation organization Fa’asao Savai’i and village chiefs and orators have worked to protect 20,000 acres of pristine rainforest by creating a preserve similar to that at Falealupo.
