Seacology expedition to Brazil

August 29 - September 9, 2025

Bem-vindos ao Brasil!

Seacology, the world’s premiere organization focused on protecting island habitats and cultures, invites you to join our first-ever trip to Brazil!

In partnership with Maioba, a leading specialist in community-focused travel throughout the country, we will immerse ourselves in the rich history and culture of two Brazilian cities and several small villages. A four-day boat tour through the Amazon will take us through the world’s most famous rainforest.

We will encounter unique wildlife, learn about the country’s unique history and culture, meet some of Seacology’s project partners and other local communities, and enjoy fantastic Brazilian cuisine.

We hope you’ll join us for an unforgettable expedition!

Belém and project visit

We begin our expedition in Belém, a city at the mouth of the Amazon River and capital of the northern state of Pará. One of Brazil’s most important cultural hubs, Belém is home to bustling markets, historic churches, museums showcasing the country’s unique traditional and modern art, and more.

Our guests will enjoy guided tours of St. Alexander’s Church, Republic’s Square, the modern art museum, and other popular destinations across the city.

Our local project: Cotijuba Island

Seacology is helping residents of this small island in the Amazon delta to protect and restore an eroded area of riverbank. In exchange for the community’s commitment to stewardship of this vulnerable environment, we are funding the refurbishment of a popular community hall, and supporting local women’s pursuit of sustainable agriculture, beekeeping, and other trades. Our group will meet with our project partners and hear firsthand how this partnership is making a difference in their lives and community.

Into the lungs of the earth

Amazon rainforest trees and blue sky reflected in water

Departing from Alter do Chão village, in Satarem city, we will set sail on the Tapajós River, one of the Amazon’s major tributaries. Our four-day cruise will take us deep into the world’s most famous rainforest, where our guests can spot river dolphins, countless bird species, and other wildlife. This leg of our expedition will take us through the white waters of the Jari Channel, the Arapiuns River, and the Tapajós National Forest.

Our boat will provide the mobility to explore this fascinating and diverse maze of waterways, while also offering comfortable cabins and an experienced crew to provide delicious local cuisine and drinks. We’ll pull up to shore to meet with a local cassava-farming community, visit a turtle nursery, and take in the majesty of a 600-year-old kapok tree, known locally as the “grandma of the forest.”

Our guides recommend rising early on the final day to take in an unforgettable Amazonian sunrise.

The peaks of Rio

Our journey concludes in Brazil’s most famous destination, the beautiful and bustling city of Rio De Janiero. Over three full days in the city, guests can enjoy guided tours of some of Rio’s most iconic highlights, including:

Sugarloaf Mountain: Scale this massive granite monolith via cable car to take in stunning panoramic views of Guanabara Bay, Corcovado, the Rio-Niterói Bridge, Copacabana Beach and the area’s many mountains and islands.

Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden: At the foot of Corcovado Mountain lies one of the world’s great botanical gardens. It is home to some of the rarest plant species from Brazil and beyond, as well as an impressive diversity of birds, fish, and mammals.

Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer: No trip to Rio would be complete without a visit to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A short train ride through pristine forest brings us to the summit of Corcovado and the world-renowned statue.

Tijuca’s National Park: On our final day, we will hike through one of the world’s largest urban forests to reach Pedra Bonita and Chinese View, among Rio’s highest and best vantage points. Toucans, coatis, and monkeys can be spotted among the dense foliage of the park’s trails. The summits offer breathtaking views of Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, and Rio’s other landmarks.
