Where We Work

Seacology has partnered with more than 400 island communities to conserve threatened ecosystems and local cultures. We’ve worked in 70 countries so far, and are open to working with communities anywhere in the world.

Africa

Seacology has funded water-storage infrastructure for communities on arid islands in Kenya, protected coral reefs in Zanzibar, and helped villages in Madagascar prevent devastating wildfires that threaten endangered lemurs and other species. Recently, we expanded our focus to West Africa, protecting mangroves and bringing solar power to a village in Cameroon. Explore all of our Africa projects.

The Americas and Caribbean

From the Pacific Northwest to the ice flows of Tierra del Fuego, Seacology projects span the Americas. Just a few results: a massive indigenous-led marine protected area in Chile, marine turtle protection in El Salvador, and a sustainable lobster fishery in Mexico. In 2021, we launched a nationwide initiative across the Dominican Republic to protect the Caribbean country’s mangroves for the benefit of future generations. Europe

We helped Mediterranean island communities in Spain and Greece protect seagrass meadows, crucial ecosystems that support marine life and fight climate change. We led reforestation efforts for native plants on the Portuguese island of Madeira. And in Ireland, we helped restore a large carbon-capturing peat bog and migratory bird habitat. Indian Ocean

With our support, the island nation of Sri Lanka became the world’s first country to commit to protecting all of its mangrove forests. We’ve supported environmental education in the world’s largest mangrove forest (it spans India and Bangladesh), helped implement a ban on taking sea turtle eggs in the Maldives, and built a museum for artifacts of the unique seafaring culture of India’s Lakshadweep Archipelago. Pacific Ocean

Seacology’s roots lie in the South Pacific, where our first project saved an expanse of rainforest from loggers in Samoa. We’ve since built lasting partnerships for conservation and resilience with many other Pacific Island communities. We’ve helped Fijian communities prepare for and recover from devastating tropical storms, built schools for local kids, and reinforced coastal infrastructure against rising seas in Palau. Southeast Asia

Indonesia and the Philippines comprise tens of thousands of islands, and Seacology is very active in these and other countries in Southeast Asia. Communities there face constant pressure from logging and oil palm interests, which we help them resist with our win-win approach to conservation. We have helped communities on the island of Borneo stop deforestation and acquire sustainable energy, protecting the habitat of endangered orangutans and pangolins. We’ve worked to create sustainable ecotourism in the Philippines. Our efforts to protect seagrass beds in Thailand ensure a habitat for some of the country’s last remaining dugongs.
